Starting in January, my old friends and I decided to get together on the first Saturday of each month to work on the Beetle. This is a bit of a throwback to the way we used to get together in the mid 90's to work on any VW projects my mechanic had on the go and the shop, and to work on the 1971 Super Beetle that is now being re-done as Project #Super71.

For years the members of the Niagara Volks Folks car club have put in countless hours in preparation for this show. In 2006 the show was taken over and headed by the staff at John's Bug Shop. Since the beginning this show has been run non-profit and relies on donations from dedicated sponsors. As well, the show has always had a food drive for many different food banks. Our main goal is to provide a venue for Volkswagen Car Show enthusiasts of all ages. This year the June Jitter Bug is going to be getting some help from THEBUGNUT.com and Rood's Media in an effort to add some new life into the show.

Our initial intention with the car was to just fix it up and get it on the road. So because of that, and my lack of skills at the time, all I could do was cover up any really bad spots with some galvanized sheet metal, pop rivets, expansion foam, undercoating, and some amazing body filler work. I have to admin that I was impressed by the end result at the time but there was no way to was going to last forever. Fast forward 20+ years and here we are... finally fixing all those problem areas the way it should have been done the first time.

We are restoring a 1971 Super Beetle and sharing the progress online with all you fellow air-cooled VW enthusiasts. During the process we started doing some research on what motor we wanted to install in this Beetle once the time comes (Always good to be prepared). When this 1971 Super Beetle was first rebuilt and put on the road in 1997 it was packing a 1835cc motor with dual 40mm Webber carburetors. We loved that old motor and we’re thinking of installing something similar, with a few more extras to go along with it.

My first VW was a 1985 Diesel Jetta that I purchased from my father. My involvement with Beetles came only after meeting a co-worker (and later roommate) that owned a ’73 Super Beetle. I was enamoured with it almost immediately. Fun, inexpensive and surprisingly versatile. I was hooked and was now on a quest to acquire one. And there it sat, a 1971 Super Beetle, parked for several years beside “General Lee Chicken” in Haliburton Ontario. It was quite solid and ran well but wandered badly on the road.

I just wanted to fill you in on what's happening with the website. We are continuing to try and grow the website and add some additional content and functionality along the way. At this point in time it's all fun and games. We are just trying to create a place on the web where we can share our passion for VW Beetles and anything related to the classic air-cooled VW hobby. We are planning on adding a few key elements to the site down the road.

Let's face it... there are probably more of us that like to tinker with our VW's than there are who wish to keep them stock. My hat goes off to those who properly preserve the history of the car down to every metric nut and bolt, but that is a special kind of person. The rest of us hacks can't leave our Beetle alone. Many of us also want to make them lower, higher, noisier, more colourful, or faster.

Over the years a collection of used parts started to grow and were being tucked way on shelves here and there. All these years later my mechanic finally decided that he is no longer in need of any of these old VW parts. He wanted to use the space for more tire storage. Tire storage has become a much more lucrative business than collecting old VW parts that just sit on a shelf.
